Learn More By Teaching Photography
By Gwen Meehan, M. Photog., CPP, FP, SP
We may be skilled as professional photographers, but we certainly don’t share the same focus (no pun intended)! Because we are all so different, we have the capacity to share what we know with each other. One of the reasons I love VPPA is because our members share and teach what they do. Have you thought about what you’d like to share with local members?
One of the truths I’ve discovered over time is that I learn more when I teach. Just when I think I’m pretty good at something, I find out there’s so much I don’t know. Teaching others will only help you improve your own skills. I usually learn the most when I am preparing my presentation/demonstration or when I am asked questions during the program.
Planning a program forces you to think critically about what you’re teaching so that you can share the information in clear, concise ways. Because you’re teaching your peers, it should be a relaxed environment among friends.
When photographers come together to learn and share their knowledge, it can create an environment of fellowship and encouragement. Giving back to this community by leading a program is an excellent way to share your passion for your craft.
So, what program will you give this year? Reach out to a District leader to put it on the calendar. Your fellow members will thank you for it!
