A Lifetime with Animals and Coming Full Circle
Capturing the Essence of Pets through Photography
Shining a Light on Shelter Animals:
My first foray into animal photography began within the confines of a shelter, where I discovered the transformative power of capturing an animal's true essence through a lens. Armed with a simple point-and-shoot camera, I documented their stories and showcased their unique personalities, hoping to ignite the spark that would lead them to a loving home. Photography quickly became a lifeline for these animals, often determining their fate.
Embracing the Great Outdoors:
In 2018, I transitioned from shelter work to pursuing pet photography as a full-time profession. No longer confined to cages, I wanted to capture animals, predominantly dogs, in their natural element—bounding through fields, splashing in water, and reveling in the joy of being themselves. Through vivid and vibrant imagery, I portray these animals as the heroes of their own stories, reminding us of the incredible spirits they possess.
The Emotional Terrain of Pet Photography:
Pet photography presents its own set of challenges, both physical and emotional. Whether it's chasing an exuberant pup along the shoreline or providing solace to a family whose time with their elderly pet is limited, this line of work demands a unique skill set. Yet, it is a privilege to be entrusted with the responsibility of capturing cherished memories that will serve as lasting testaments to the bond shared between pets and their families.
From Sheltering to the Client's World:
Transitioning from the sheltering world to working directly with pet photography clients has been a profound experience. Unlike the broken relationships and hardships often encountered in the shelter
environment, these families represent a different spectrum of life circumstances, expectations, bonding abilities, and financial means. It has reminded me of the diverse range of human experiences and deepened my appreciation for the unique role photography plays in preserving their precious memories.
Evolution of Technique and Equipment:
Throughout the years, I have continually invested in improving my skills and equipment, all while remaining loyal to my beloved Sony cameras. From underwater housing to drones and other specialized tools, I strive to push the boundaries of creativity and provide clients with exceptional imagery. By embracing new technologies, I’ve invested in better equipment and still use my beloved Sony cameras. I’ve become a gadget geek. I use underwater housing, a drone, and other (expensive) accoutrements to give clients the best images I can create.
I’ve also upped my lighting game…and yes, Disney host…I certainly can light up that building – especially if there’s a dog sitting in front. Challenge accepted!
Conclusion:
The journey from an excited young photographer to a seasoned professional documenting the vibrant lives of pets has been nothing short of remarkable. Through the lens of my camera, I am privileged to immortalize the unique bond between humans and their beloved animals, creating tangible memories that will be cherished long after their time together. As I continue to evolve as a pet photographer, I am humbled by the opportunity to illuminate the lives of these incredible beings and celebrate their undeniable presence in our world.
