"The Art of Storytelling in Photography"

Photography is not just about figuring out the right aperture, lens sharpness or your camera settings.

It’s about more important elements such as “voice”, “emotion”, and “point of view”.

It’s about being a  VISUAL STORYTELLER.

A picture without a story is just that: a superficial picture. Without a story, the photography has no depth,

no personal meaning, no emotion. An image with a story is  the catalyst in triggering a chain reaction

of emotions making it memorable, iconic and impactful. Stories are all about making us excited, laugh, cry

or feel empathy for someone else.

Kristy Steeves, a Master Photographer, has spent her life as a storyteller, first as an

award winning television journalist for 25 years, and later as a photographer. She will

share her approach on how she creates “characters” for clients, not only tell the tale of

that person, but to add emotional impact and meaning to their story, through

composition, lighting, posing, choice of clothing and props.

It is our jobs to tell someone’s story in a single frame. Let the image speak. Give it a

voice. Kristy invites you to come and create, to find your voice, to write your story. Just

like a good book or film that gets you emotionally invested in its characters

photographers can do the same with their images.

BIOGRAPHY:

Kristy Steeves graduated from Indiana University with a double major in journalism and political science. While in college she took two photojournalism classes and absolutely loved it. Despite her love for photography she pursued her goal of becoming a news reporter. She worked as a broadcast journalist for 25 years. During that time she won four prestigious Emmy awards for her story telling, including news reports on a 9/11 rescue team at the World Trade Center, an in depth look at the dangerous lives of drug dealers and a police SWAT team drill competition. Her lifelong interest in photography eventually lured her away from television. In 2009 Kristy made a life changing decision and switched careers. Now, instead of being in front of the camera, she is behind one. Kristy is a Master Photographer, a Photographic Craftsman and a Certified Professional Photographer. She specializes in studio portraits, high school seniors, families and pets. She has been Ohio Photographer of the Year and Professional Photographers of Northeast Ohio Photographer of the Year. Kristy has won first place awards multiple times in the state print competition for the general, children and pet portrait categories. She also earned the prestigious J. Anthony Bill award for having the most outstanding portrait in the state of Ohio. She has been an Ohio Top 10 Photographer the past four years. She is also a Grand Imaging Award nominee in the Children Portrait Category with Professional Photographers of America. She is past president of Professional Photographers of Northeast Ohio and is also a member of Professional Photographers of Ohio, serving as its current print competition chairman, along with being a national council member of Professional Photographers of America.
