VPPA: The Business Partner I Didn’t Know I’d Have
by Jamie Young, SP
I had the good fortune to join VPPA over 10 years ago. During that time, I have met amazing people (some I know will be lifelong friends), found a studio mate (Laurie Bateman Walko), and learned more than I could have ever imagined about this art that we all love.
I couldn’t have envisioned the impact these relationships and education would have on my business, my confidence, and my overall accomplishments. I’ve realized VPPA isn’t just an association of like-minded individuals. VPPA is truly my business partner.
There are few decisions that I make in my business without running them past a member of VPPA. Early morning phone calls to bounce off ideas over tea and coffee are not uncommon and are extremely appreciated. The most remarkable thing is that no matter what you need, someone is always willing to assist. In the past year, my partner has shown up in a major way!
I was given an opportunity to work with schools and needed fellow photographers to help. Every single person who assisted was a current or former VPPA member. They gave their time and amazing talent to aid in my success.
My studio mate, Laurie, and I received valuable help with installing our floors, painting, and even the design of our studio from VPPA members. The support of our photographic family has been instrumental in keeping us moving toward our dreams of full-time photography. The fellowship has been a crucial part of this journey.
Every other Friday night, I’m blessed with the company, encouragement, and accountability of a group of VPPA photographers who push each other to achieve our goals. We share our high and low moments, and I'm continually impressed by the support and encouragement we give each other.
As any great partnership allows, I’ve been able to reciprocate by serving in the organization as the current Tidewater District assistant director, on the Board of Directors as recording secretary, and most recently as membership director. It’s an honor to work for an organization that has given me so much and volunteering allows me to say thank you to my peers for all the support and guidance they’ve provided me as a member.
Thanks to VPPA’s partnership, my photography business has come together in ways I never thought possible. I’m grateful for years of cheerleading from my family and friends, but VPPA has been the missing piece that has helped me truly see the light and envision an amazing future.
Thank you, partner!
